Louis Johnson published many volumes of verse over 45 years. This selection comes from all phases of his career, with reprints of many hard-to-find works. This book includes a biographical introduction and many of Johnson's own comments on the origins and inspirations of his poems.
Louis Johnson was a prolific writer, and a frequent reviewer and broadcaster. He established the New Zealand Poetry Yearbook, edited the quarterly Numbers, ran Capricorn Press and later started his own press, Antipodes. As editor and publisher, his policy was always to encourage unknown writers as well as including established poets. He was the second Victoria University writing fellow and president of PEN. He died in 1988 having just completed a Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellowship at Menton. The Louis Johnson New Writers Award today continues his encouragement of developing talent.
