The twelve essays in this volume reflect the interests and teaching of FLW Wood and JC Beaglehole, the two main pillars of the History Department of Victoria University of Wellington for almost thirty-five years. Written by former pupils and colleagues to honour them on their retirement, the essays touch on many fascinating and important aspects of New Zealand and Pacific history, ranging from the influence of early missionaries to the evolution of trusteeship and independence, from land problems and electoral patterns to problems of modern economic policy.

The editor, who first joined the staff of the History Department in 1944, and who has therefore been associated as a colleague with JC Beaglehole and FLW Wood longer than anybody else, contributes a personal memoir, a thoughtful impression of their work and personalities.
