The conference that gave rise to this volume was held in honour of the Rt Hon Sir Ivor Richardson, on the eve of his retirement as President of the New Zealand Court of Appeal.
The conference brought together a wide diversity spanning eight distinct areas of law:
The choice of these areas of law derived from Sir Ivors own interests in law over the course of his career. Other than as a festschrift, such a diverse collection of topics would rarely find their way together as the structure for a conference. Yet that proved to be the most valuable dimension of the conference. The juxtaposition of different areas of the law reminded the conference of the importance of underlying principles, tensions, and values that run through the law.
