In his new collection, Harry Ricketts finds room for three songs written in Hong Kong in 1975, and a 1979 poem about a War poet. Other poems remember departed friends and early experiences, and celebrate the abiding pleasure of reading, writing and cricket. Formally adroit, Just Then is by turns tender, funny and often surprising.
'Harry Ricketts has an irreverent conversational tone to his poems and when I read them, I can hear his voice. It is this aspect of his poetry that I particularly like. There is no big poetic artifice and his topics are frequently personal, often very tender, and usually laced with a mischievous irony.' —Maggie Rainey-Smith, Beattie's Book Blog
