On 22 June 1954, in a secluded part of Victoria Park in Christchurch, Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker battered Pauline's mother to death. The infamous murder was depicted in Peter Jackson's 1994 film Heavenly Creatures.
Daughters of Heaven, a play by Michelanne Foster, examines the passionate friendship between two girls, and the events leading up to the murder. The play premiered at Christchurch's Court Theatre in 1991.
